International Museum Day 2016, Hong Kong

Museums and Cultural Landscapes

Back in 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the role that museums play in society.

The theme of the 2016 event is ‘Museums and Cultural Landscapes’. Cultural landscapes are properties of human culture which, interweaving nature and history, represent the ‘combined products of nature and of man’. Closely associated with our life and the society to which we belong, cultural landscapes are constantly changing. Museums have always conducted work on their collections, research, exhibitions and education. Under the growing influence of current trends, museums can today no longer merely focus on their collections: they need to go beyond their traditional boundaries and take responsibility for conserving the surrounding environment in the society in which they operate. Only then can they undertake a more active and significant role in the issues involved in facilitating the protection of cultural landscapes.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year. For details of IMD 2016 in Hong Kong, please check out from the website of Hong Kong Public Museums.

Revitalised from the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, Jao Tsung-I Academy is one of the participating organisations of the “International Museum Day 2016, Hong Kong”. Guided tours, cultural programs, souvenir privileges will be offered on 14 to 15 May 2016 (Sat and Sun). Free admission for the public. Please visit this webpage for the latest updates. Come and be inspired!
