Introduction

Heritage of Mei Ho House is the first public housing museum established and managed by the Youth Hostels Association of Hong Kong. Mei Ho House was born out a fire that broke out in Shek Kip Mei on the night of December 25, 1953. The fire broke out in a squatter area on the edge of Shek Kip Mei Hill, causing nearly 58,000 people to lose their homes. In order to provide long-term housing facilities to the victims, the first batch of eight six-storey resettlement buildings, including Mei Ho House, came into being. Mei Ho House, completed in 1954, marked the beginning of Hong Kong’s public housing policy. To set up a living museum on the original site to display the history of the community, the public housing environment and the changes in people’s living habits is of great significance. The Heritage of Mei Ho House now has a brand-new exhibition hall. The new exhibition will again take the public back in time, further engaging visitors and enabling them have a more immersive understanding of the residents’ living conditions, their feelings and the transformation of Mei Ho House.
