“Hong Kong Wedding @JTIA” Series – Talk on “The Colorful Bridal Costumes”

The traditional wedding costume for brides is known as “Guà” (褂裙).  Golden dragons and phoenixes embroidered on a Guà symbolize good luck.  A superbly crafted Guà with a dragon and phoenix adds grandeur to a wedding.  Guàs are made up of two pieces, a top coat and a skirt.  Guà comes in various types and colours and are classified by the density of their gold and silver stitching: the King of Guà (褂皇), the Queen of Guà (褂后), the Five Great Blessings (大五福), the Medium Five Blessings (中五福) and the Small Five Blessings (小五福).  Five bats are also embroidered on a Guà to symbolize the bestowment of five kinds of blessings.  Therefore Guàs with a dragon and phoenix are also known as Five Blessings Guà (五福褂).
